Workshop Descriptions

Grant Writing 101 Series

This series of workshops shares some of the secrets of the trade that will help you plan and write successful proposals. We will discuss what to include in different sections of your proposal and specific strategies that will improve your success rate in the grant world.

  1. An Overview. This introductory module presents basic information about the world of grantmaking and grantseeking. Participants will also receive tips on how to secure their first or fiftieth grant award.
  2. The Need Statement. "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" No, it isn't. But there IS a reason why you need funding. We will discuss how to find and use comparative data to demonstrate the need for your grant request. You’ll learn strategies for presenting data and making a compelling case to support your funding request.
  3. The Budget. This session will help you create a basic budget that you can include in a grant proposal when the grantmaker doesn't provide a form for you to use. We will also discuss what information to include in a budget narrative and how to demonstrate in-kind support.
  4. The Evaluation Plan. This session will take the mystique out of designing an evaluation plan for your program. You will gain confidence as you discover the logic in logic models and learn how to write measurable objectives and performance measures.
  5. The Finishing Touches. Learn some of the secrets of the trade to improve your writing, strengthen your proposals, and increase your success rate in the grant world.

Grant Writing Clinic

Designed as a follow-up to the Grant Writing 101 series or similar beginning-level workshop, this clinic offers you the opportunity to apply what you've learned to your own situation. Come prepared to roll up your sleeves and begin working on a specific project for your organization—researching funding opportunities, reviewing grant guidelines, outlining narrative sections, brainstorming in small groups, etc.

Researching Grant Opportunities

Learn how to access announcements for upcoming grant opportunities and use online tools to search for public and private grantmakers. We will also discuss how to find the "best fit" between your organization's needs and prospective funders' interests.

Cultivating Prospective Grantmakers

Learn how to make a good impression with a potential funder to increase your chances of being invited to submit a grant proposal. This session applies to private-sector grantmakers such as foundations and corporations.

Federal Grants: Taking it Step by Step

Applying for a federal grant may seem like a daunting task. This workshop will walk you through the steps you need to take to submit a competitive federal proposal. Beginning with registering your organization with Grants.gov, we will discuss the requirements for submitting a federal application on-line.
